Read across from the player's weight and down to their height. Blank cells (—) mean the chart lists no length for that combination. The chart's heaviest row is labelled "180+ lbs" and the row above it is 171 to 180 lbs; we show the heaviest row as 181 lb and up.

Softball bat length and drop by age
Age is a rough guide; height and weight are better. The Scheels softball chart does not say whether it is fastpitch or slowpitch, and it matches its baseball age chart exactly, so treat it as general guidance. The JustBats drops are for fastpitch.
| Age | Bat length (Scheels softball guide) | Weight drop, fastpitch (JustBats) |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 | 24"–26" (5–7) | -11, -12, -13 |
| 7–9 | 24"–26" (5–7); 26"–28" (8–9) | 7–11: -10, -11, -12 |
| 10–11 | 28"–29" (10); 30"–31" (11) | 7–11: -10, -11, -12 |
| 12 | 30"–31" | 12–14: -10, -11 |
| 13–14 | 31"–32" | 12–14: -10, -11 |
| 15–16 | 32"–33" | 15 and over: -8, -9, -10 |
Three quick length checks
- Chest to fingertips. Hold one arm straight out, parallel to the floor, and measure from the center of the chest to the fingertips.
- Floor check. Stand with the bat held by the knob at your side. The barrel should rest on the floor.
- Arm check. Put the knob at the center of your chest and extend the bat forward. If you can grab the barrel, the length is about right.
These checks are from BaseballMonkey. For a growing player it also advises thinking ahead, since a bat that is already too small will soon hold them back. When moving up, JustBats suggests a bat 1 to 2 ounces heavier than the last one.
Questions
What size fastpitch softball bat do I need?
Match height and weight on the chart. For example, a player 4 feet 9 inches to 5 feet tall and 100 pounds falls in the 91 to 100 pound row and gets a 31 inch bat. Age is a rougher guide: ages 11 to 12 are usually 30 to 31 inches (Scheels).
How do I check a softball bat length without a chart?
BaseballMonkey gives three checks. Measure from the center of the chest to the fingertips with one arm held straight out. Or hold the bat by the knob at your side; the barrel should rest on the floor. Or put the knob at the center of your chest and extend the bat; if you can grab the barrel, the length is about right.
What is bat drop in softball?
Drop is the bat length minus the bat weight in ounces. A 33 inch bat that weighs 23 ounces is a drop -10 (JustBats). For fastpitch, JustBats lists drops of -11 to -13 for ages 4 to 6, -10 to -12 for ages 7 to 11, -10 and -11 for ages 12 to 14 and -8 to -10 for 15 and over.
Does this chart work for slowpitch softball?
This chart is a fastpitch chart. Slowpitch bats are sized and weighted differently, so check the bat maker's own guide for slowpitch.
