Frame sizes are in centimetres. BikeRadar, Road Bike Rider and Trek agree on the same general size, but their ranges can differ by up to 4 cm in a band; where they differ the calculator shows the full range. BikeRadar's table for gravel bikes is identical to its road table. Trek's chart only runs from 156 to 191 cm, and Road Bike Rider's starts at 152 cm.

Road Bike Rider's size labels and Trek's inseam figures are in the tables below. Frame size labels (S, M, L) differ between brands, so go by the frame size in centimetres.

Bike size by height and inseam
Road Bike Rider's chart matches both height and inseam to a size label. Inseam is a useful second check: if it points to a different size from your height, BikeRadar's advice is to take the smaller of the two.
| Size | Height | Inseam | Road / gravel frame | Mountain frame |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 5'0"–5'4" (152–163 cm) | under 27 in (69 cm) | 47–50 cm | 13–14 in |
| S | 5'4"–5'7" (163–170 cm) | 27–29 in (69–74 cm) | 50–54 cm | 15–16 in |
| M | 5'7"–5'10" (170–178 cm) | 29–31 in (74–79 cm) | 54–56 cm | 17–18 in |
| L | 5'10"–6'1" (178–185 cm) | 31–33 in (79–84 cm) | 56–58 cm | 19–20 in |
| XL | 6'1"–6'4" (185–193 cm) | 33–35 in (84–89 cm) | 58–62 cm | 21–22 in |
| XXL | over 6'4" (over 193 cm) | over 35 in (over 89 cm) | 62 cm and up | 23 in and up |
Trek road bike sizes
Trek's own chart gives overlapping ranges by design, so treat it as a guide rather than a strict cutoff.
| Trek road frame (cm) | Rider height | Rider inseam |
|---|---|---|
| 49 | 156–163 cm (5'1"–5'4") | 74–77 cm (29–30 in) |
| 52 | 163–168 cm (5'4"–5'6") | 76–79 cm (30–31 in) |
| 54 | 168–174 cm (5'6"–5'9") | 78–82 cm (31–32 in) |
| 56 | 174–180 cm (5'9"–5'11") | 81–85 cm (32–33 in) |
| 58 | 180–185 cm (5'11"–6'1") | 84–87 cm (33–34 in) |
| 61 | 185–191 cm (6'1"–6'3") | 86–90 cm (34–35 in) |
Hybrid bikes: none of the sources publishes a hybrid size table, so this page does not give one. Ask the brand for its chart for the specific hybrid model.
How to check the fit
- Standover. You should be able to stand over the top tube with some clearance. Frames that are too big are harder to control.
- Measure your inseam. Use the book method: shoes off, feet about 8 inches apart, book spine-up against your crotch, measure floor to book top and average two or three tries.
- Between sizes, go smaller. Saddle height, saddle setback and handlebar height are adjustable, so a slightly small frame can usually be fitted; a large one cannot be shrunk (BikeRadar).
- Test ride. Brand charts are a starting point. A shop can check reach and fit on the actual model.
Questions
What size bike frame do I need for my height?
It depends on bike type. A rider about 5'9" (175 cm) lands on a 54 to 56 cm road frame by the BikeRadar, Road Bike Rider and Trek charts, and on a 17 to 18 inch mountain frame by Road Bike Rider and about 16 to 18 inches by BikeRadar. Use the calculator for your height and compare it with the brand's own chart for the model you buy.
What if I am between two bike sizes?
BikeRadar says the common advice is to take the smaller of the two. Saddle height, saddle setback and handlebar height can all be adjusted, and a local shop can help if you are unsure.
Is a road bike size the same as a mountain bike size?
No. In these charts road and gravel frames are measured in centimetres and mountain frames in inches, and the numbers do not convert. A rider of 170 to 178 cm is a 54 cm road frame and an 18 inch mountain frame on the BikeRadar overview chart.
How do I measure my inseam for a bike?
Take off your shoes and bulky trousers, stand with your feet about 8 inches apart, press a hardcover book spine-up between your legs and keep it parallel to the floor. Measure from the top of the book to the floor, repeat two or three times and average the results (Road Bike Rider).
